Ji-Tong's finest - QJ 6301

Some QJ were visibly distinctive from most of the others. Highly decorated and kept in supershine conditition, the crew of QJ 6301 was honored for its performance and professionalism. Fitted with a railing along the boiler and brass lettered slogans that praised the crew's excellent record on safety and punctuality, 6301 was one of Daban's finest engines. It would have qualified as a top candidate for a beauty contest under Ji-Tong's steam engines. As to complement all that, the engine was later topped with an additional horseshoe- shaped slogan on its smokebox in 2000.

6301 at SiMingYi. Waiting on a windy morning in November 97, I wasn't really expecting much. The ever blowing wind had ruined many previous attempts to take the shot. On that day, we were lucky, though. As on a request, the wind that usually blew from the wrong side here dropped for just a few seconds, allowing that pleasant picture with 6301 heading a heavy basalt and oil train.

A few days later, 6301 passed XiaKengZi in the very last gleams of a warm November day. It goes without saying that only seconds later, this spot would have been "unphotable" and the photographers were more than satisfied at that day.

On another trip to China in Winter 2002/ 03, we met again at Daban - see here: Daban Gallery
